Beginning in 1911, the Magazine Club began meeting as a way for Mayo Clinic doctors' spouses to socialize and support each other. In 1968, the name changed to The Alice Mayo Society (AMS) in honor of the wife of Dr. Charles W. Mayo, son of Dr. Charles H. Mayo, who was known for her hospitality and welcoming spirit.
